Last weekend, I had a mini break in Adelaide. I have always loved Adelaide – so much so that many of my friends call me an unpaid ambassador for South Australian tourism. If it only had Brisbane’s climate – I suspect I would have moved there by now.
One thing I noticed on this trip was just how many cyclists there are in the CBD. At first I thought the locals might have all been inspired by the Tour Down Under. After a few days though I realised that most of the cyclists were recreational or commuter cyclists rather than committed athletes. There were families taking a ride out to the beach, couples riding to the numerous festival venues and people collecting their groceries from the Central Markets in vintage style baskets.
Maybe this is the reason why – divided bike lanes. The coroner recently commented that town planners in Brisbane need to look for ways to divide traffic from cyclists with physical barriers rather than just painted lanes.
It would be great if we could have more of these divided lanes in Brisbane. We would be sure to see fewer fatalities, fewer problems with traffic congestion and an improvement in our air quality.
