The sound of her parents arguing and the loud thump ending the commotion, has haunted Sloane McBride since she was 5 years old. That was the last night Sloane had seen her mother, Clara alive.  As soon as she finished high school she fled her small hometown for the bright lights of New York.

Having forged a successful career, a funeral leads Sloane to return home in the quest for answers to her mother’s disappearance. 10 years have passed since she had seen her father, Ed and her brother Trevor. Sloane has harbored suspicions about her father’s involvement in Clara’s disappearance. Her homecoming is one to find answers. The problem is that Ed is now the town Mayor and wants to see Sloane silenced.

The book is effectively a mystery with many twists in the plot to keep you guessing as to Ed’s involvement in his wife’s disappearance and Sloane’s motivation for forging ahead with her investigation, which Trevor sees as a witch hunt. Could her mother still be alive? Answers will only be found by unraveling her family’s history.

Throw in the jilted ex boyfriend and best friend to make things a little more interesting from a plot perspective, and this is an easy weekend read.

Most of the way I was fairly confident I knew where Novak was steering me with her story, but there were still enough twists and turns to keep me engrossed over the weekend. Easy reading and 3 out of 5 stars.
