It is that festive time of year again and work Christmas parties are in full swing all over Brisbane. You just need to go out anytime of the day and see work colleagues enjoying themselves at all sorts of different party venues. It is a time for employers to thank their employees for the year that was and for employees to let their hair down and have some fun.

There is abundant commentary about the obligations of employers when it comes to holding work sponsored Christmas parties. But what of the employees? Can they go to town on the employer’s drink tab and act as they please? The simple answer is “no”.  Of course some employees will do this without fail and the employer will be required to address and manage such behaviour accordingly.

What are your responsibilities when attending the end of year work celebration? As an employee you should be mindful when attending the work party, that your employer’s workplace policies and procedures continue to apply at the function, wherever it is being held. You must therefore adhere to the company’s polices which will include those relating to:

  • Sexual Harassment
  • Bullying
  • Workplace Health and Safety
  • Discrimination
  • Drugs and Alcohol

A failure to adhere to the employer’s policies and procedures at the Christmas function may lead to you being subject to disciplinary action which could, in the most serious of cases, lead to termination of your employment. No one wants the year to end on such a note.

So remember when attending your work party this year – drink responsibly, act responsibly and have some fun!
